In short
Ask your fabricator what must be ready before templating. Do not assume a survey date, manufacturing slot or installation date is confirmed until it has been agreed.
1. Brief and initial estimate
Start with the layout, preferred material and key features. Discuss removal, reconnections and any access constraints. Ask for a written estimate that states what information is still provisional.
If you are replacing surfaces in an existing kitchen, use the replacement guide to establish the cabinet checks and removal arrangements first.
2. Settle the specification
Confirm the exact material, finish, thickness and edge. Finalise the sink, tap and hob models and any splashbacks or waterfall ends. Ask to approve the slab selection or pattern layout where that is part of the design.
Make one person responsible for coordinating decisions between the kitchen installer, fabricator and other trades. Keep a dated record of agreed changes so everyone is working from the same plan.
3. Prepare for templating
Follow the fabricator’s readiness checklist. Ask which cabinets and panels must be fixed, which appliances or templates must be present and whether old surfaces need to be removed. Requirements differ by project and provider.
At the appointment, discuss joints, overhangs, exposed edges and any dimensions that depend on another trade. Ask how the finished specification will be approved before cutting begins.
4. Fabrication and delivery planning
Confirm when the specification becomes fixed and how a change would affect cost and timing. Agree the delivery route and the provider’s access assessment. If special handling is needed, understand its scope and price in advance.
Do not book dependent work on the assumption of a standard lead time. Ask for dates based on the selected material, readiness and actual production availability.
5. Installation and handover
Agree who will be present and when other trades can reconnect services. At handover, review the surface and agreed details with the installer. Record any concerns promptly and ask how they will be handled.
- Keep the final specification and invoices.
- Obtain written cleaning and use instructions.
- Separate manufacturer warranty information from workmanship terms.
- Ask when the surface and any newly fitted services can be used.
The project readiness checklist gives you a practical list to work through.
